What is EMDR?

EMDR stands for Eye-Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. The creator of EMDR, Francine Shapiro, discovered that she felt less emotional upset (desensitize) if she scanned her eyes back and forth (eye-movement) while thinking about distressing content from her present and past experiences. She used this discovery to launch research and adapt additional techniques to assist clients in reprocessing* past distressing experiences.

The Train

EMDR therapy is often compared to as being on a train. After exploring therapy themes and patterns of distress, you’ll arrive at a focusing point (train departure) and goal (arrival) for your EMDR work. Like riding on a train inside your head, you’ll look out the window and observe the contents of your mind. Your therapist will check in at intervals (train stops) and assist you along your journey until you reach your goal.
